Scott
You
made me a knife about a year ago. I just wanted to send
you this short note to thank you for your efforts and
tell you how happy I am with the knife and my dealings
with you. As you may recall, we met at a gun show in MD
and agreed that you would make me a hunting knife with
the Buffalo horn handles. Just when you told me it would,
the knife arrived at my house. It was gorgeous. It was
exactly what we had discussed. Luckily it arrived in time
for deer season in VA and I was able to dress and skin
several good sized deer with it. I am a bit meticulous
about sharpening my blades, so while I cannot tell you
how long it might have gone without sharpening, I can
tell you holds the best edge of any knife I own. It sharpens
like a dream on a strop which I use after every
use. Whatever steel you use is outstanding. I love the
knife.
Everything
you told me would happen happened, just as you
promised. It is rare these days to have something made
delivered on time, at the agreed upon price and then to
exceed my expectations in quality. Thank you.
I
have given your name and card to many people.
Sincerely,
John
Review
of the BEAST as contracted by Scott Glossman.
I
received a 9 ½ inch blade blank of ¼ inch
5160 spring steel unfinished and untreated by way of two
other fine makers. That is not the discussion of this
review. As for some background, Scott posted a link to
one of the blades that he did and inquired if he would
do so for me. A few emails were exchanged and my blade
blank was on its way to Scott.
Upon
receipt of the blank, Scott kept me in the loop as to
what was going on every step of the way. Time from delivery
to completion did not seem to take that long as I knew
everything that was going on. What I got was more than
I could have expected. The blade was mirror finished and
convex ground with green linen mircata scales and fitted
into a heavy duty hand stitched brown leather sheath.
The handle is 1 ¼ inches thick and fills my hand
extremely well and the leather sheath rides high on the
hip.
On
to the meat of the review. I took the BEAST out for some
demolition on area shrubbery and overgrown trees in the
creek area in the backyard. The knife sailed through them
with no problem, it was not much of a test. Limbs of up
to two inched were dispatched in a single blow which leads
me to believe that it would excel in the shelter building
arena. I took another branch and pounded the knife through
some very dry and seasoned hard wood that was laying on
my woodpile. Eight to ten blows later I had split a log
5-6 inches in diameter and 12 inches long into two equal
parts and soon had the other halves quartered. This would
be good in the event of needing to build a fire in wet
conditions to get to the dry wood on the inside. I had
nice crisp edges to catch fire. That brings me to my next
test. The 5160 throws nice sparks on my magnesium rod.
I fuzzed up some sticks along with some dried leaves and
cotton from my PSK and had a good fire built in my grill
in no time. (I can grill in the city, but cannot have
an open fire.) I would not hesitate to take any knife
that Scott makes into a survival area as I have tested
the basics and it passed with flying colors. I have even
stored it in the leather sheath to see what that would
do and it has had no ill effects. The knife is a true
work horse. I only wish I had the money at the time to
send all three blanks when I sent this one because his
backlog was not near as long then as it is now, but a
talented person cannot be kept a secret for long. Congratulations
on your added successes.
